Negotiating a salary

Salary talks can feel tough. With the right timing, research, and clear proof of value, you can lift your offer and set a stronger base for future increases.

Principles that work

  • Be prepared Map the role, scope, and typical pay for similar roles in your city or region.
  • Pick the moment Talk numbers after you receive a written offer or clear signal you are the final choice.
  • Think total package Consider base, super, bonus, commission, allowances, leave, and learning budget.
  • Stay professional Aim for a fair outcome for both sides and ask for the final offer in writing.

Keep your request realistic. A common band is 5 to 15 percent above the first offer if you have proof of impact.

Money items

  • Base salary
  • Superannuation rate and employer contributions
  • Bonus or commission structure
  • Car allowance or travel costs

Time and flexibility

  • Hybrid or remote days
  • Flexible hours or roster
  • Extra annual leave or purchased leave

Growth and support

  • Training budget and certifications
  • Equipment and software
  • Clear progression plan and title

Frame your case with proof

Use short result lines that link your impact to the role. Three is enough.

  • Lifted revenue or reduced costs by a clear amount
  • Improved speed, quality, or customer outcomes
  • Led or supported work that delivered a measurable result

Format: situation, action, result. Keep each line under 18 words.

Build a respectful counter offer email

Send after a written offer or when you are told you are the preferred candidate.

Compare total package offers

Estimate the yearly value of each offer. Enter base, super rate, and any expected bonus or benefits.

Offer A

Total A: 0 AUD

Offer B

Total B: 0 AUD

This is a simple estimate. Check tax, super rules, and contract terms before you decide.

If talks slow down

  • Ask about budget range and how salary bands are set
  • Trade items that cost less for them but matter to you
  • Agree a review in three to six months with written goals

If it is not a fit, thank them and keep the door open. Your path crosses again more often than you think.
